Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorders may the way people communicate and interact.

Speech sounds

Many children experience difficulty when learning to speak. Speaking is a complex motor and cognitive task that takes time and practice to develop.

Literacy

Speech pathologists support pre-reading, reading and spelling skills in children.

Understanding & speaking

Language understanding (comprehension) and speaking (expression) are skills necessary for learning at school, social communication and participation in the community.

Stuttering

Stuttering behaviours vary between children but may present as becoming 'stuck' on a word or sound, repeating sounds or words, or elongating sounds.

Funding

Speech pathology services may be funded through NDIS, Medicare or private health insurance.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

If your child has a significant and permanent disability or developmental delay, the NDIS helps you and your child access services and support in your community.

Medicare

If you are referred by a GP under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, your child may be eligible for a Medicare rebate on up to 5 allied health services per calendar year.

Private health insurance

You may claim for speech pathology sessions if this is an included extra in your private health insurance.
